Before Tom Hingley joined Inspiral Carpets in Spring 1989 he was in Manchester band called Too Much Texas. TMT released one single on uglyman records later home of Black I Am Kloot and Elbow, and an EP on Playtime called Smart with Lee Severin on vocals. TMT supported the likes of New Order, House Of love, Faith No More, EMF and The Beloved.

TMT released a retrospective record callled juvenilia on newmemorabilia records on april 1st (UK). Inspiral Carpets where always one of the most underrated bands of the whole Manchester baggy scene in the early nineties, never quite getting the respect and critical acclaim of acts like The Happy Mondays, Stone Roses and The Charlatans. With songs like "Joe" and "This Is How It Feels To Be Lonely", they made sizeable dents in the charts and had a large following, but history it seems hasn't been kind to them - looked on as a footnote in the baggy explosion. Comprising lead singer Tom Hingley's early recordings when he fronted the band Too Much Texas, JUVENILIA is a collection of songs that lay down the blueprint for what he went on to achieve with the Inspirals. Sure, these songs may be missing that iconic Clint Boon organ sound - but make no mistake, there are songs on display here every bit as accomplished as anything The Inspiral Carpets ever managed.

A surprisingly polished and complete set of songs, it appears that Too Much Texas were a cut above the usual first forays into music that so many of these unearthed retrospectives uncover. From the bouncy pop jangle of opener HURRY ON DOWN, it's clear that this was a band who quite possibly could have cut it on their own terms. It's Tom Hingley's unmistakable vocals that shine through the brightest, singing in that classic Manchester twang that suggests down to earth man on the street whilst at the same time aiming for the stars. JAYNE is another slice of bouncy upbeat pop, reminiscent of the Inspirals Saturn Nine while the baggy guitar shuffle of the Happy Mondays like ANCHOR lets you know in no uncertain terms what period of time these recordings came from. A Byrdsian guitar jangle shimmers its way through VOLCANO whilst HARP is a woozy precursor to This Is How It Feels To Be Lonely and YOU BLISTER MY PAINT a chirpy pop tune with a cheeky spring in its step. Perhaps the closest to sounding like an Inspiral Carpets hit, GAME OF LOVE, centres itself around an infectious sounding pop chorus and pre-baggy drum patterns - all thats missing is a Clint Boon organ run and voila. The hazy bass driven ROGUE proves another highlight - Hingley crooning trance-like over shimmering guitar lines and hypnotic bass lines.

JUVENILIA is a fine collection of songs, one for the Inspiral fans foremost but also working as a telling snapshot of the pre baggy Manchester sound.
