Based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, Black Sun Empire are made up of brothers Milan and Micha Heyboer and their close friend Rene Verdult. Their debut releases came on Dutch labels, but the real break came on DJ Trace's DSCI4 label, which at the time was the pinnacle of tech-driven jungle. Noticed instantly, they were quickly commissioned for remix work and built good relations with the likes of Technical Itch and DJ Friction. At this point it was obvious these guys had taken their dark techno influences and stumbled across something quite unique and popular. The next step was to start their own imprint.
One thing Black Sun Empire have, is attention to detail and unrivalled quality control, to call them perfectionists would be an understatement. From day one their label, Black Sun Empire Recordings, was a success and a shining example of what can be achieved by never settling for second best. The real eye opening factor in the label has been Black Sun Empire’s aptitude for A&R, rather than relying on their own work they have brought in artists from all over the world to feature.
With one long player under their belt, Black Sun Empire have gone from strength to strength ever since and have chosen winter 2005 to unleash their second. "Driving Insane" was a massive worldwide success, but it was always in their minds that they could do better. Hence the dawn of their second long player "Cruel & Unusual", a combination of their own excellent production skills plus a few favours from a handful of the most respected artists in d'n'b.
