A passionate music lover from earliest childhood Lars started out writing his first pieces of music with a synthesizer and sequencer, which his parents bought him when realising how obsessed their son was by music.

Playing guitar as a teenager Lars deeply fell in love with the music of Pat Metheny, Keith Jarrett and John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Wes Montgomery, etc... but also with countless other styles beyond jazz such as soul, funk, rock, brazilian sounds, classical music, contemporary, minimal, etc...

In the following years Lars worked as a session musician, playing
in countless Jazz quartets, Funk crews, Brazil bands and Fusion combos - always searching for new vibes and styles in the world of music. In the mid 90s Lars became fascinated with the deep and soulful side of House music. He realised he shared a common vibe with his older brother Marek Bartkuhn as well as DJ Yannick and together they formed Lamaya Productions and their label NEEDS where they put out almost only their own productions.

Since then Needs has rapidly become a synonym for soulful high quality
Music. Eventhough routed in the field of House and other elctronic uptempo branches it has been Lars’ effort as the musical mind of the trio to open their music for countless other influences and to allow textures and arrangements to happen in their productions that are not necessarily fitting into the closeminded world of common dancemusic at their time. Lars Bartkuhn and his crew also gained worldwide recognition as remixers with works under their belt for Francois K, Jazztronik, Ennio Morricone, Ian Pooley, Atjazz, Russ Gabriel, Franck Roger, Playin' 4 The City and labels such as Palm Pictures, Compost, Especial, Infracom, Clairaudience, Wave and Groove Attack to name a few.

Many of LARS BARTKUHN’s productions have been played, charted and loved to
death by DJ heavyweights around the globe - including PASSION DANCE
ORCHESTRA’s seminal anthem "WORLDS", often heralded as a true dancefloor
Classic’. All the other 12“s he produced for NEEDS (and some other labels such as Clairaudience and King Street) have found a true fan community worldwide.
Besides his own projects he also produced and arranged the LÜHNING-single „ALL OVER“ (on NEEDS) featuring the great singer INGA LÜHNING (also the voice of Rejazz) and worked on the Lühning-album „ENTFERNUNG“ which is a pretty artful blend of indie/rock/pop/avantgarde as producer/programmer/arranger over a timespan of more than three years (!).
Lars has also two full length albums out: DREAMLAND (Needs/Impartmaint) and CHOREOGRAPHIES (Impartmaint); both albums are expansions to the vocabulary he set up with Marek and Yannick for Needs and show the various influences in the musical world of him.

On the DJ side Lars and his Needs crew were hosting their legendary ‚Needs (Not Wants)’ nights in their hometown, while regularly playing all over Europe. For promoting his albums he also toured to Japan. Lars also worked with the RedBullMusicAcademy as a lecturer (Rome/Ekaterinenburg) and studio producer (Seattle).

After a longer time without any releases which has it’s reason in working on many new projects constantly he now comes back with the 12“ entitled DIMENSIONS on SONAR KOLLEKTIV followed by a full length album in 2008. The album will be showing his most intense and complex arrangements so far. The tunes and harmonies carry memories of brazilian music from the 70’s as well as contemporary touches of jazz and some slight hints of electronical background. The songs are held together by a storytelling kind of flow and by listening carefully one can hear thematic, harmonic and formal connections inbetween the pieces.
