On December 21, 1989, at the end of a busy year on the road and in the studio with the Pat Metheny Group, guitarist-composer Metheny joined bassist Dave Holland (Miles Davis, Stan Getz, Theolonius Monk) and drummer Roy Haynes (Charlie Parker, Sarah Vaughn, Chick Corea) at the Power Station in New York City for a single day’s, let’s-see-what-happens jam. As Metheny has recalled, “I wasn’t thinking about making a record. I just wanted to play with these guys.” The result is a thrilling, live-inthestudio disc, documenting the creatively charged encounter among these stellar multi-generational players, and it yielded the trio a Best Instrumental Composition Grammy Award for the Metheny original, “Change of Heart.” As the Washington Post declared upon its initial 1990 release, “Question and Answer is his third and best trio album. A mixture of new pieces by Metheny and freshly overhauled jazz vehicles, all recorded during one spirited eight-hour recording session, the album has a wonderfully free and spontaneous air about it.” This newly remastered version of Question and Answer is the latest vintage title to be added to Metheny’s growing Nonesuch catalogue. His latest disc, 2007’s Tokyo Day Trip, is also his most recent trio date, featuring bassist Christian McBride and drummer Antonio Sanchez and it was recorded with the same anything-goes spirit as Question and Answer. The new set has garnered as much praise as that earlier outing; The New York Times recently called Metheny a “great improviser at the top of his game.” (Quelle: Warner Music, 2008) FORMAT: CD
