No Place Like Home [Pop]

Michiko, die ebenso zurück gezogene wie tiefgründige Londoner Elektropop-Künstlerin mit Wurzeln in Australien, Japan, Deutschland und England veröffentlichte vor vier Jahren ihr Debütalbum „Daydreamer“, das durch einen eleganten Mix aus Bargroove, Electronica und Pop überzeugte. Ihr zweites Album „No Place Like Home“ ergänzt diese attraktive Mischung mit ausgeklügelteren Arrangements, einem breiteren Spektrum an Beats und einem noch stilsichereren sowie reizvolleren Touch.
Glücklicherweise bleibt sich Michiko als die verführerische „City Siren“ ihres Debütalbums treu. Mit pointierten Lyrics, verlockenden Vocals und einem äußerst coolen Trip-Hop Sound macht sich „No Place Like Home“ auf, ein großes Publikum zu erreichen. Dabei klingt sie ein wenig Sade und Goldfrapp, die mit den ehemaligen Produzenten von Naked Music in einer stillvollen Bar abhängen. Oder wie es Michiko in ihrer unaufdringlichen Art ausdrücken würde: „It’s just the music I like and maybe you like, too.“
Wenn man die Gene von deutschen und japanischen Eltern kreuzen, das entstandene Mädchen in Sydney aufziehen, ihr im Alter von sechs Jahren Klavierunterricht und als Teenager Gesangsunterricht angedeihen lassen und sie dann nach Deutschland verfrachten würde, um sie als Toningenieurin auszubilden, sie dann mit der Geschichte und dem Zauber von Jazz vertraut macht und ihr ein Flugticket nach London besorgt, dann würde wohl so eine Künstlerin wie Michiko heraus kommen. Obwohl sie von Songwriting, über Arrangements, Produktion, Mix und Mastering alles selbst übernimmt, bleibt sie auf sympathische Weise bescheiden.
„Ich mache meine Musik nur mit einem Laptop und einer sehr einfachen Software“, erklärt Michiko. „Mit meiner Maus klicke ich jede einzelne Note selbst rein und nehme meine Vocals mit einem Rodes Condensor Mikrofon auf. Es gibt kein Studio, keine Band, keinen Produzenten und keinen glamourösen Lebenswandel. Alles ist, wie das Essen einer guten Hausfrau, selbst zubereitet. Ich arbeite einfach mit den Zutaten, die ich besitze und mit denen ich meiner kostbaren Zeit gut und effizient umzugehen weiß. Vielleicht werde ich irgendwann meine kleine elektronische Ausstattung ein wenig erweitern. Aber wenn es mir gelingt Songs zu schreiben, die den Menschen da draußen gefallen, habe ich eigentlich mein Ziel erreicht, oder?“
Während sich in der Beschreibung ihrer Musik eine große Bescheidenheit ausdrückt, blitzt in ihren Songzeilen eine sehr selbstbewusste Persönlichkeit auf. So singt sie in „Pieces of the Heart“ zum Beispiel: „I am the pieces of your heart / I am your brand-new start / I am the warmth on your skin / I am the joy in everything.“ Eine ganz andere Haltung nimmt sie dagegen in „Empty Room“ ein, wo sich ihr großer Humor Bahn bricht: „I love to dance in an empty room / I can dance badly and no one knows / It’s just me and music – yeah!“ Auch wenn ihre anspruchsvolle Ader immer wieder auftaucht (besonders in „(I’ve got to know) Everything About You“), kann sie sich jederzeit in eine schnurrende Katze verwandeln, wie in „Cherry Picking“, einer wunderschönen Downtempo-Nummer: „It’ sunday afternoon and I’m waiting for you / going cherry-picking for love“.
Vom wohligen Vibe des Openers „Morning Delight, das Bilder eines noch ganz verschlafenen Räkelns herauf beschwört zum schnellen Groove des titelgebenden „No Place Like Home“, von den bouncy Beats in „Everything About You“ und „Right There“, dem verführerischen „Fly Away With You“, der Dancefloor-Nummer „Empty Room“ (mit himmelwärts aufsteigender Querflöte und cooler Spoken Word Darbietung) zur introspektiven, aber Perkussion-getriebenen Ballade „Learning To Love“ ist alles vertreten, was ein modernes, abwechslungsreiches und inspirierendes Love Album ausmacht. Und nach dem zwischen bittersüßen Vibe und frech-aufsässigen Groove angelegten „Midnight & Lime“, wartet mit dem Lemongrass’ Playa Bossa Remix von „No Place Like Home“ noch ein echtes Sahnestückchen auf die Hörer.
Michiko’s kluges Songwriting und ihr wohl temperierter Gesang, der sich sanft über den Sound legt, machen das Album schnell zu einem Puzzlestein, ohne den man sein Leben nicht länger als vollständig ansehen kann. Egal ob man gerade seine letzte Affäre Revue passieren lässt, sich nach dem Traumpartner sehnt oder das perfekte Candlelight-Dinner plant: Dieses Album liefert immer den perfekten Soundtrack!

Michiko, the enigmatic London-based electro pop artist with roots in Australia, Japan, Germany and the UK, released her debut album „Daydreamer“ in 2006, with a smooth mix of lounge, electronic and pop. Her follow-up „No Place Like Home“ adds more elaborate flavours, upbeat sounds and a campy varnish to create a truly delightful vibe. She certainly stays the compelling „City Siren“ she introduced us to on her debut album but her well-written lyrics and her alluring vocals laid over a cool trip-hop feel make her ready to reach out to a much bigger audience. „No Place Like Home“ sounds like Sade and Goldfrapp hanging out with the producers of Naked Music to create a very contemporary love album. Or as Michiko would humbly put it: „It’s just the music I like and maybe you like, too.“
If you were to mix the blood of German and Japanese parents, raise the child in Sydney, give her piano lessons at the age of six, singing lessons from the age of sixteen, instill her with a sense of musical curiosity, move her to Germany to train her in studio sound and recording techniques, introduce her to jazz and then give her a plane ticket to London, what you would get is what Michiko is today. Although she does everything from songwriting to the mixing and mastering, she likes to keep a low profile.
„I make music using my laptop and a simple piece of software“, explains Michiko. „I use a mouse to programme the notes in manually and record my vocals with a shiny Rodes condensor microphone. There is no band, no studio, producer or glamorous lifestyle. It’s all literally homemade. I’m just working with the tools I have and know how to use well, in the precious time I can squeeze out of my life. If I get the chance I might upgrade my little electronic workshop a little, but if I can write songs I like, that maybe you like to, then that’s all that matters.
Although Michiko is so modest in describing her amazing piece of work, her lyrics are more confident and straightforward. In „Pieces of the Heart“ she sings „I am the pieces of your heart / I am your brand-new start / I am the warmth on your skin / I am the joy in everything.“ An altogether different angle is taken in „Empty Room“ revealing her great sense of humour: „I love to dance in an empty room / I can dance badly and no one knows / It’s just me and music – yeah!“ Whereas her upfront approach resurfaces in „Everything About You“ (especially when she demands „I’ve got to know everything about you“), she turns into the sweetest lover in „Cherry Picking“ when she languishingly confides „It’ sunday afternoon and I’m waiting for you / going cherry-picking for love“.
From the sweet vibe of the opening „Morning Delight“ evoking images of a languorus early morning bed sprawl, the uptempo beats of the eponymous „No Place Like Home“, the bouncy tracks „Everything About You“ and „Right There“, the beguiling „Fly Away With You“, the hot dancefloor tune „Empty Room“ (equipped with a soaring flute and cool spoken word performance) to the introspective, percussive-driven ballad of „Learning To Love“ there is all you may wish for in an all-embracing, entertaining and inspiring love album. After the bitter-sweet and, in parts, naughty groove of „Midnight & Lime“, Lemongrass’ Playa Bossa remix of „No Place Like Home“ waits to be picked as the red apple of all your lovers’ paradise.
Well-measured crispy synths and gradually evolving vibrating bells are part of the overall, addictive vibe. Michiko’s well-conceived, enticingly phrased vocals laid over stimulating grooves will soon make her album a jigsaw piece of your life you no longer cannot not do without.
